MY HEART IS IN THE EAST: This papercut was inspired by the idea of Yehudah Halevi, who wrote in Spain of his longing for the land of Israel. The image is of the balcony of a home, as possibly found in the Golden Age of Spain. Instead of the scenery of Spain, however, the view is that which what the poet yearned to see, the city of Jerusalem. Around the papercut are verses traditionally recited in the synagogue as the song of the day for Monday,"Great is God, and much praised in the Lord's city, mountain of His holiness. Fairest of sights, joy of all the earth, is Mount Zion, by hthe northern sides of the great king's city. In her palaces, God is known as the Stronghold." (Psalm 48:2-3)
